Tiny Epic Mechs - Board Game Review!

1-4 players - Age 14+ - Playing time 30-60 minutes

What is it?

A card game with lots to do each turn! This is a game of 6 rounds. Each round consists of 3 phases:

  • The Program phase - means each player chooses directional cards which in later phases move their "Meeple" and also allows them to take an action.
  • The Execution phase - means the players in turn resolve their movement cards and play the actions on the card.
  • Scoring - Comes from victory points gained by inhabiting the gameboard with Mines and Turrets.

During program and Execution phases the players can:

Collect Resources - Which give you energy or credits in order to do certain actions
OR
Purchase Weapons - Basic or Advanced
OR
Deploy Mines or Turrets - Which give you more victory points at the end of the round
OR
Power Up - To Heal or Upgrade to Power Armour!
OR
COMBAT! - Outright attack your enemies

The aim of the game is to win by accumulating the most Victory points by doing all of the above, as well as powering up into the Mighty Mech!

What I thought

Initially quite daunting to set up and play, there's SO many game pieces and to be honest it takes a little while to set up. But once you get going and you've got the hang of the mechanics, it's actually quite a clever little game! There's so many mechanics to it, but because most of the costs of actions are listed on the character cards it's quite easy to get used to.

The character cards are really nice and sturdy and although some of the game pieces are tiny, like the ones for tracking life, credits and energy, they are actually really cute.

The best thing about this game, or rather one of the funnest things, is that for every weapon you buy, there's a tiny little game piece to add to your little "Meeple". Also when you upgrade, you literally suit up your "Meeple" into Armour and then you can also pop him/her into the Mighty Mech, which again looks awesome when combined with all the weaponry!

The Verdict!

A really great game, definitely for the older kids and adults. I can imagine kids younger than 14 really struggling.  It can get a little confusing because of the programming for moves as well as there just being so much to do on each turn!

I love the depth of the game. The mechanics of being able to counter attacks is really fun. For example, if I attack with a ranged weapon and someone attacks me with a melee weapon, my counter attack gets powered up! It all depends on the type of weapon you have.

Adult Rating:  Good for the adults and teens. So much to do and you def need to pop on your Strategy head!

Family Rating: Avoid playing with littler kids, there's definitely too much to have to help them with here.
