What is it?
A new kids construction kit! XYZ, they're plastic tiles which I'm told are strong enough to take an adults weight when stepped on!
Currently taking up space on my desk as a funky tidy! I've not stepped on them yet, I really like my storage where it is..
They're colourful and pretty sturdy!
Very clever system!
Basically, there's a kind of code which runs around the edge of the tiles. The code is marked by 1,2,3 and 4 dots. In order to build you just need to make sure that none of the numbers join to their own e.g. a 1 can't link to another 1, 2 can't link to another 2 etc.
Please have a look at my images for examples of what you can do with this.
What the boy thought
My son was a little perplexed with these, he's not very co-ordinated and a bit of a weed.. we're doing our best to feed him up, I'm trying to get him lifting weights!! (that last bit is a lie.)
So anyway, he tried to put a few of these together but was not really strong enough to do it properly (so they kept falling apart). He was very impressed with what Daddy made with them though, and he asked me if he could make a chair! I said he could of course, but not with the amount of tiles I'd been sent.
If you have enough of these tiles, you make make all kinds of models, see below for a few from XYZ's website.
The Verdict
A very interesting concept, which I think needs a strong hand and an eye for imagination. It really is good fun and pretty artsy too!
Do check out the XYZ Builds website for more designs.
You can also get sent some of the tiles from as little as £20 if you back them on Kickstarter! Not quite available yet, but would be great if they are!
