Star Realms - Deckbuilding Game!

1+ Players (Depending on versions purchased) - Age 7+ - Playing Time 30 minutes+

What is it?

Star Realms is a deck-building game, which has you using Trade (coins) to buy ships and outposts from a central trade line. The great thing is you all start with the same cards, 8 trade and 2 attack ships. It's then up to you to build your deck, buying the cards in the middle trade row and utilising factions to gain the advantage, buy better cards, attack your opponent/s and in the end destroy their home world.

There are 4 main factions:

Machine Cult - Has a combo of trade and attack cards, but have the extra ability to mulligan the rubbish cards from your deck.
Trade Federation - Allows higher trade cards, as well as providing more Authority (health)
Star Empire - Allows you to draw more cards and make opponents remove cards from their hand.
Blob - Basically a nasty alien race who are mostly about attacking!

What I thought?

You need to think strategy with this game as you purchase the better cards, it's not just about getting the best cards though, you need to think about the other ships and outposts you may have in hand which allow you to do more things, like picking up more cards, allowing you to do more damage, add health, get rid of less useful cards (leaving your deck with only epic ones!), or concentrate on certain factions so they can complement each other.

It's really easy to pick up and very difficult to put down! We've already bought so many of the expansion packs, giving you different ships and bases, which in turn give you different abilities.

There are several versions of the game, of which I've added the links below. One to note though, is Frontiers, which not only lets you play 4 player, but has the opportunity to play SOLO against the Blob Boss or in several other scenarios!

The Verdict!

One of the best deck-building games I have played.  The fact this came from a Kickstarter campaign is real credit to Kickstarter and crowd-sourcing websites.

The main games (the starter sets) are amazing and ALL the expansion packs may seem like, "more of the same" but in reality some of them can change the game entirely. The best that we've purchased so far have been 'Missions', which provide an opportunity to complete mini goals during the standard game providing you with bonuses; 'Heroes', which have immediate faction effects; and 'Events', which can totally change the game, like having a comet blast everyone for 7 health!

Adult Rating: Great for the Adults, this is actually the game which introduced my partner into the world of geeky card and dice games!

Family Rating: The kids also love this game, and we've had big epic battles. We do tend to amend the rules slightly, instead of killing off people one by one, we apply the attack points "fairly" so everyone usually dies on literally one turn!

Star Realms is available in a few different starter packs, all at low prices from Magic Madhouse!

Absolutely fantastic to get you into the game or if you want to play on your own against the AI. The campaigns are blimmin' hard though!!
